Each city has its own history, and Luxembourg is no exception to the rule. Moreover, this city, this country has a history of more than a thousand years. Through this article, we tell you the beautiful story of the city of Luxembourg. If you want to know more, keep reading !

What are the origins of this city, and where does this name come from ?

It all started with Sigefroi. Indeed, the city was more inhabited by the Treveri, who were found in particular in the east of Gaul. But subsequently, this territory was successively invaded by the Franks and the Romans. During the year 963, Count Sigefroi, coming from a rich and noble family in the Meuse-Moselle region, recovered a steep portion of land from the monastery of Saint-Maximin de Trèves. It was in fact a kind of rocky cape which is today the Bock rock. It was at this time that the name of Luxembourg was officially pronounced for the first time.

Indeed, according to the charter which recorded this transaction in 963, there was a small fort called “Lucilinburhuc”. This name means “small fortified castle”. This is how this name appeared and was transmitted from the city to the country. And, this is how “Luxembourg” was born, the same name attributed to both the city and the country.

A boom that began in 1952

Luxembourg has a rather moving history, as it was not built in a day. For nearly 9 centuries, Luxembourg remained a fortified city with a gigantic fortress called "Gibraltar of the North". But, following the Treaty of London in 1867, the Grand Duchy was declared a perpetually neutral state, which led to the dismantling of the fortress within a few years. The competent authorities spared no effort to prevent Luxembourg from becoming a small provincial town.

Politicians have also made every effort to attract international organizations, but without real success. It was not until 1952 that luck suddenly smiled on the city. Indeed, the foreign ministers of the first European community took Luxembourg as their temporary seat. From this provisional choice was born the Luxembourg of today which, alongside Brussels and Strasbourg, represents one of the 3 seats of the European Union. Moreover, many European organizations are based in Luxembourg. These include the Court of Justice, the Court of Auditors, the Investment Bank, the Publications Office, etc.

As you will have certainly noticed, Luxembourg is full of some very fascinating anecdotes that not everyone necessarily knows.
